Buying Chickens

January 24, 2012 | No Comment |

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to buy chickens to keep for pets? Well, there are a couple of things you should know beforehand. Proper handling and feeding of chickens is important for their wellbeing and survival. You also have to read up a bit about what chickens are accustomed to in their environments. Do your initial research before shopping for chickens.

Buy Chickens

Since chicken are often fragile and delicate birds, they need to be handled with care. Do be gentle with them and try not to touch them too much when they first arrive. They have to get used to their surrounds. Also, look into types of chickens. Buy chickens that are relatively local to your place. Before you purchase chickens, though, you have to ensure that you are allowed to keep your chickens in your backyard. Check with your local council and make sure that you can keep your chickens. Usually they allow hens, but no roosters, since roosters are loud and noisy. Roosters can even fight amongst themselves, which is bad for the neighborhood.

When you buy chickens, look around for trustworthy dealers or hatchers. There are some hatcheries online that can sell you chickens. They may deliver as little as three chicks. However, most of the will not ship more than twenty to fifty chicken, and most will not ship in the winter since that is bad for the chicken’s health. This is why you should place most of your orders in the springtime, providing ample time for your shipments.

But before the chickens finally arrive at your place, you have to investigate the type of food that is best for your chicken breed. Be sure to visit your local suppliers for animal food and see what they say. They offer great advice. Make sure you have enough food and water ready when your chickens finally arrive because they are sure to be thirsty and hungry.

If your chickens seem stressful when they arrive, that is ok. Just handle them gently. In fact, it is better not to handle them at all in the first two or three days. You want them to get used to their surroundings. After that time period, you can start talking with them and socializing a bit. You should introduce them to your children and family as well. Make sure that your kids handle them gently, though.

Next, prepare a nice, warm coop for your chickens. Have a thermometer handy so you can check up on the temperature in their living shelter. For the first week or so, try to keep the temperate about ninety degrees Fahrenheit. In the second week, make it eighty degree Fahrenheit. In the third week, try to keep it between seventy and seventy five degree Fahrenheit. This will allow your chickens to regulate their own body temperature. You can use a heat lamp with red light bulbs since they are soothing.

Don’t forget to feed your chickens are prepare dishes with nice, clean water. Get them to drink a bit if they are not drinking. Elevate the water so that the chickens don’t get wet when they’re roaming about. If chickens get wet, they get ill quite easily. Now, build a coop for your chickens. It has to be warm and clean. It has to be dry as well. Make sure there is enough space for your chickens to move about. Make sure that it is also safe from predators, like cats, dogs, and such. Although they won’t harm the chickens, they can be rather rough with them. Line your chicken coop with paper towels, wood shavings, or even dry leaves. Enjoy!
